Secret Link Uncovered Between Pure Math and Physics by http://ift.tt/2ziB144

Mathematics is full of weird number systems that most people have never heard of and would have trouble even conceptualizing. But rational numbers are familiar. They’re the counting numbers and the fractions—all the numbers you’ve known since elementary school.

They’re the counting numbers and the fractions—all the numbers you’ve known since elementary school. But in mathematics, the simplest things are often the hardest to understand. They’re simple like a sheer wall, without crannies or ledges or obvious properties you can grab ahold of…

….Sets of numbers can have symmetry, too, and the more symmetry a set has, the easier it is to understand—you can apply symmetry relationships to discover unknown values. Numbers that have particular kinds of symmetry relationships form a “group,” and mathematicians can use the properties of a group to understand all the numbers it contains….

We must reconcile privacy and safety in the digital era by https://is.gd/GH23I4

The fourth industrial age has been driven by a transformative digital revolution. Billions of people worldwide are now inter-connected. We have nearly unlimited access to knowledge, computer processing power, and cloud-based data storage….

…However, the digital revolution also intensifies fundamental tensions regarding how best to reconcile the privacy of our citizens with our desire for personal safety; pitting at times national security against our own individual liberties, and balancing the interests of a company’s customers against its civic responsibilities…

…Unfortunately, many laws governing data sharing and privacy were created decades ago and are woefully outdated. For example…

Google’s AutoML lets you train custom machine learning models without having to code by https://is.gd/MxkPfH

Google today announced the alpha launch of AutoML Vision, a new service that helps developers — including those with no machine learning (ML) expertise — build custom image recognition models.

The basic idea here, Google says, is to allow virtually anybody to bring their images, upload them (and import their tags or create them in the app) and then have Google’s systems automatically create a customer machine learning model for them.

Opera now protects you from cryptojacking attacks by https://is.gd/kA4S26

Opera today launched version 50 of its desktop browser. Sadly, this release doesn’t come with a cake to celebrate this milestone (not even a tiny cupcake), but the newest release does include a new feature that makes sure that nobody can mine crytocurrencies in your browser.

In Opera, this new cryptojacking feature is automatically enabled when you turn on the browser’s ad blocking tool.
