A pioneering computer scientist wants algorithms to be regulated like cars, banks, and drugs by https://is.gd/7FOiY3

It’s convenient when Facebook can tag your friends in photos for you, and it’s fun when Snapchat can apply a filter to your face. Both are examples of algorithms that have been trained to recognize eyes, noses, and mouths with consistent accuracy.

When these programs are wrong—like when Facebook mistakes you for your sibling or even your mom—it’s hardly a problem. In other situations, though, we give artificial intelligence much more responsibility, with larger consequences when it inevitably backfires.

Narro Reading of The meteoric rise of Chinese consumerism will reshape the world, and maybe even destroy it

Listen on Narro
When China was still largely rural, poor, and socialist, politicians exhorted the country’s people to patriotic activities such as increasing grain output for their economy’s sake. Now, to sustain China’s economic boom, the country needs good citizens to go shopping. And the people have obliged. Between 2000 and 2010, consumption in China multiplied from about $650 billion…

If you are looking for a dedicated media box for your living room or bedroom, the first thing you should consider is Kodi. This is a media center software package that delivers a very focused consumption experience.

…OpenELEC…… can run on traditional PC hardware, but also Raspberry Pi, and, my favorite — WeTek boxes. Today, version 8.0.4 achieves stable release. It is a fairly ho-hum update, focusing mostly on fixes and stability.

It’s no secret that Facebook’s judgment calls on risky content are sometimes more than a little problematic. But just what are the rules guiding those decisions? You’ll know after today.

The Guardian has obtained leaked copies of over 100 internal documents outlining Facebook’s rules for handling sensitive content, and it’s clear that the social network is struggling to walk a fine line between freedom of expression and protecting users. At least some of it is understandable, but there are areas where its decision-making might rub you the wrong way.

Intel’s Compute Card could transform the world of smart devices by https://is.gd/dQWPif

It doesn’t take too long before your typical “smart” gadget becomes dumb. After a few years, the hardware inside of your TV or connected refrigerator will be hopelessly out of date. And if you want to upgrade, your only choice right now is to buy a whole new device.

Intel is hoping to change that with the Compute Card, a credit card-size device that packs in all of the hardware — a processor, memory, storage and networking capabilities — needed to make any device smart.

Linux Foundation: Introduction to Linux course review by https://is.gd/UQXex0

ypwvmxurmsayvhxnw9jphh-1200-80

The Linux Foundation offers a number of online courses via the edX platform including an Introduction to Linux.

One very attractive feature of these courses is that they are free to take, although you can pay an additional fee of $99 (around £75) for a formal ‘certificate of completion’ if you wish.

The Introduction to Linux course has been prepared by Jerry Cooperstein, the Training Program Director for the Linux Foundation, and there’s even a short welcome message from the creator of the Linux kernel, Linus Torvalds himself. So it’s safe to say you’re in good hands.
