Rocketdock 1.3.0: a light but powerful dock for Windows 7, Vista and XP

This week, in our Freeware Page, we posted a brief review about Rocketdock, a terrific “Apple style” dock for Windows. We decided to test Rocketdock on a Windows XP and the results were positive and we did not find bugs. Rocketdock is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, Vista and the brand new Windows 7 using just 10MB of RAM. To add a new icon it is sufficient to drag and drop it into the bar and it will be automatically added. To cut off an icon you have to drag it from the dock to an empty space on the desktop and it is immediately removed. To conclude we suggest this freeware because it is really customizable and easy to add & tune to your existing desktop. Recommended! AddThis Podcast

How to solve a troublesome problem with the keyboard and AWN (Avant Window Navigator) to when upgrading Ubuntu to its 8.10 version!

Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we posted some brief notes about how to solve a graphic bug we found on Ubuntu after the upgrade to the 8.10 version. In fact, when we upgraded Ubuntu to its 8.10 version we were not able to visualize AWN (Avant Window Navigator) because it was impossible to switch the Visual Effects to Normal but we were obliged to use just the None settings. At the same time we lost the left part of our keyboard: the numeric pad and the “arrow pad”. Surfing Internet we found several different suggestions but the only one effective for us  (and for our NVidia graphic card) was that which suggested to completely remove the xserver-xgl package using Synaptic Package Manager. We do not know why but, after removinging xserver-xgl, we actually solved all our problems contemporaneously. Suggested for all that people who has found the same bug when upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10! LightScribe: an interesting (and not too expensive) technology to personalize our CDs/DVDs.

Usually, we prefer not to insert posts about software or hardware which is not free but this week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish), we have decided to make an occasional exception talking about LightScribe: the technology which allows you to print laser-etched labels on your CDs/DVDs. We are pretty sure that all you already know this technology and the fact that LightScribe is a mix of hardware and label-making software to burn labels. When we decided to test the LightScribe system we were manly attracted by the low costs and the versatility of what we were able to make but after a couple of days we change a little our point of view. This technology is really interesting, relatively cheap and easy to use but we think that it only could be profitably used by those people who need to make some professional copies of their CDs/DVDs. For all the other people, like us, it can be considered as a toy or an extra gadget to buy for our spare time backup copies of DVDs but not much more than this. Something for your spare time or to use for your hobbies! AddThis mp3 link

How to solve some screen resolution problems when upgrading the kernel on Ubuntu!

Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we added a brief, elemental guide to fix a particular inconvenience that sometimes happens with new kernel versions on Ubuntu. In fact, every time I decide to upgrade the kernel I have big problems with my graphic card (NVidia) and when rebooting I am not able to see my screen. I think that one of the possible problems is the AWN (a -MAC style- bar) I have installed on my PC. After many wasted hours trying to fix this matter I find a very fast solution. I start my Ubuntu 8.04 in the safe mode (sometimes using the previous kernel version) and I launch EnvyNG (Applications – System Tools – EnvyNG) to automatically reconfigure my video card. I know that probably this is not the most advanced way to fix my kernel problem but you can believe that it is very fast and effective. Try it if necessary! AddThis mp3 link

Just a simple Flock icon with the transparent background.

Flock icon - transparent backgroundSome days ago, after the update from Firefox 3.0 to the 3.0.1 version I completely lost my favorite browser. I have not already solved the problem so I installed Flock but I was not able to find a Flock icon with a transparent background to insert on the AWN dock. So I decided to create a 48×48 icon using a common Flock icon with a white background. For this purpose I used KIconEdit (version 3.5.9 – Ubuntu version) and in just five minutes I solved my problem. The result is not perfect but acceptable so I would like to share it with all you. I hope it would be useful to someone. Enjoy it! AddThis mp3 link

Pictomio: the most advanced photo and video manager for Windows

This week, in our Freeware Page we have posted a brief review about Pictomio a very good program for “3D accelerated browsing of your photo and video”. Pictomio is more advanced than many similar software and its graphic appearance is very attractive. Pictomio has a full range of commands which allow you to easily organize and manage your photographs collections in at just few clicks. I spent, more or less, one hour to understand all (I suppose) the different features supported by this freeware and, at the end, I can say that my experience has been more than positive. What negatively surprised me is that Pictomio does not allow you to upload your images and videos to ftp servers or websites like Flickr .com. To sum up, Pictomio is something you have certainly to try because in the future with more social features it could become a benchmark for photo and video manager category. Interesting! WinFlip (part of Vista Transformation Pack): when your Xp has the same Vista graphical effects for active windows.

Win XPToday, in our Freeware Page we have posted a short but (effective) review about WinFlip: a tiny program which allows you to have the same Vista graphical interface for active windows. Personally I do not believe thatWinFlip will change your way of working with XP but it could represent a good graphical solution for all that people who want to upgrade just some XP functions without changing their OS at the moment. Last but not least, since last December, WinFlip has been included into the Vista Transformation Pack the famous compilation of programs which allows to full enjoy the main Vista graphical effects on your XP. Anyway, I believe that the installation of the complete Vista Transformation Pack could be negative (in terms of slower performances) for many computer using XP. AddThis mp3 link

Open Source Living and Iconlet: two multiplatform open source “mines”!

Open Source LivingToday, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief review about two interesting websites: OpenSourceLiving.com and Iconlet.com. In particular, OpenSourceLiving contains a library of 130 multiplatform (Windows, Linux, OS X) open source software. The main menu is very intuitive and all the different sections are very simple to explore. Moreover you have the possibility to suggest open source projects which are not included in the website yet. On the otherIconlet hand, Iconlet is a search engine dedicated to icons released under the Gnu, Creative or Eclipse licenses. The “advanced search” option allows you to organize your search preselecting the image resolution, the graphic format and the license. This particular website also offers a useful plug-in for a Iconlet dedicated search field in Firefox. Last but not least, for each icon found, Iconlet provides full information about author, image resolution, graphics format and license type. AddThis mp3 link

Crystal Diamond: one of the most impressive icon Theme for KDE!

Crystal DiamondToday, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have written few lines about a very particular icon Theme for KDE and Gnome (not till ready at the moment): Crystal Diamond. This icon Theme is really complete and the graphical effects are bright and very smooth. Moreover, the creator (an Italian geek) has developed different mods for the main Linux distribution (Ubuntu, Fedora, Suse, Mandriva RedHat, Debian, Gentoo etc..). We like this Theme also because it contains different icons for any application, so it is possible to 100% personalize our desktop and continuously change it tasting always new graphical solutions.
