How to create free tutorials and presentations: the multiplatform Wink

This week in our Freeware Page we have posted a brief but complete tutorial about Wink: the best free “tutorial and Presentation creation software” for Windows. We installed Wink with just few clicks and after a reboot (recommended) we were ready to try its features. Wink is easy to use, includes audio features and it is possible to add notes directly to every single frame. Anyway Winks has many output formats as Macromedia Flash, EXE, PDF, PostScript and HTML so you can decide if you prefer to create a video, a standalone .exe for pc users, a printable manual or a webpage. Moreover, Wink allows you to choose your best ratio between performance and video quality. Unfortunately its Linux version runs only with x86 computers and we have to wait next release to completely enjoy Wink’s features. Recommended!

Open Source Living and Iconlet: two multiplatform open source “mines”!

Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief review about two interesting websites: OpenSourceLiving.com and Iconlet.com. In particular, OpenSourceLiving contains a library of 130 multiplatform (Windows, Linux, OS X) open source software. The main menu is very intuitive and all the different sections are very simple to explore. Moreover you have the possibility to suggest open source projects which are not included in the website yet. On the other

hand, Iconlet is a search engine dedicated to icons released under the Gnu, Creative or Eclipse licenses. The “advanced search” option allows you to organize your search preselecting the image resolution, the graphic format and the license. This particular website also offers a useful plug-in for a Iconlet dedicated search field in Firefox. Last but not least, for each icon found, Iconlet provides full information about author, image resolution, graphics format and license type.

Clonezilla-SysRescCD 1.3.0: the best free rescue and backup/restore system for ext2, ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs, fat and ntfs!

Clonezilla-SysRescCD is something we have been looking for since months. In our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief (full of links) review about this rescue Cd in its 1.3.0 version. Clonezilla-SysRescCD is a very interesting merge (multi boot CD) between Clonezilla and SystemRescueCD which allows you to solve many (better quite all, for what we read) “disasters”; that can be made by everyday pc users like us. Just to sum up the features contained in Clonezilla-SysRescCD we add some brief notes about the two different “parts”; contained in it. Clonezilla is a fast and reliable OpenSource clone system (OCS) which supports ext2, ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs, fat and ntfs partitions. On the other hand SystemRescueCD, based on a bootable Linux OS, allows you to repair your system and/or recover your data after a crash. We simulated some “disasters”; on an old Pentium4 (running Windows XP) and the results we obtained were substantially very positive.

Comodo backup for Windows XP: the freeware you need to have!

Today, in our Freeware Page we add a review on one of the free softwares offered by Comodo. Comodo backup is very simple to use but effective freeware which allows you to easily store sensitive data on a external Hard Disk or on a multisession DVD. If you prefer you can also use the ftp feature. The graphic interface is essential but clean and in just few clicks you are able to start store files and/or folders. Last but not least if some troubles happen to the hard disk you can restore them directly from your pc with one click. Free, Easy and Fast!

HTTrack: a very useful multiplatform (Windows, Linux and OS X) website copier!

This week we have reviewed a useful multiplatform (Windows, Linux and OS X) software dedicated to all the people who desire read their favorite web-sites also when disconnected from the web. HTTrack is a very powerful program which contains easy (not always unfortunately) features to download complete websites and navigate them when outline. In our Freeware Page you can find a brief but incisive review about this program. Moreover for the Linux geeks, we inserted some tips (how to install and useful links) about HTTrack in our Linux Page. Sometimes the use of HTTrack could be a little difficult but after some experiments you will be able to manage it without problems. Enjoy it!

Qtpfsgui: a terrific multiplatform (Linux, Windows, MAC OS X) HDR imaging program.

Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have post a review about Qtpfsgui: a very powerful program to create HDR images. Qtpfsgui supports the following HDR formats: OpenEXR, Radiance RGBE, Tiff (16bit, 32bit and LogLuvand), Raw image and PFS native. Obviously also LDR extensions are well managed: JPEG, PNG, PPM, PBM, and TIFF(8 bit). Using this program you can easily create terrific looking HDR files from a set of images (formats: JPEG, TIFF 8bit and 16bit, RAW) of the same scene taken at different exposure setting. The program is very easy to use and after just few minutes you learn how to use it properly. Last but not least, the Qtpfsgui website has a link to useful documentation in French and a (unfortunately missing) link for Ubuntu users.

Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have post a review about PeaZip: a terrific program which is able to solve many common problems when extracting certain types of archives such as ACE, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, ISO, Java archives (JAR, EAR, WAR), Linux installers (DEB, PET/PUP, RPM, SLP), LHA, LZH, Open Office file types, PAK/PK3/PK4, RAR, Windows installers (NSIS, some MSI), Z/TZ. This program was developed in two different versions: for Windows (XP and Vista) and for Linux. Moreover a powerful portable/standalone version (for both Windows and Linux) is available. Last but not least, using PeaZip you will be also able to create 7Z, 7Z-sfx, BZip2, GZip/TGZ, PAQ8F, PAQ8JD, PAQ8L, PEA, QUAD, split (.001), TAR, ZIP archives. In few words, PeaZip is tiny, extremely useful and easy to use program: strongly recommended!

SpaceTime: powerful 3D browsing for Windows 2000/XP/Vista!

Today in our Freeware Page, we posted a review (in Spanish) about SpaceTime: a brand new 3D tabbed “browser” which runs using the Internet Explorer 7 engine. SpaceTime has a powerful graphics and is very attractive to use but, unfortunately it needs a good hardware to run without problems: 512MB RAM, 128MD graphics adapter (3D capable), Pentium 4 2.4GHz or AMD 2400xp+, a minimum screen resolution of 1280 x 1024 and an ADSL connection to Internet. SpaceTime is in its beta version but during the tests we didn’t find any bugs. Moreover we were fascinated by its multiple features; in fact it is also possible to search (Google, Google Images, Yahoo!, Yahoo! Images, Flickr) and shop (ebay) in an delightful 3D environment. At the moment SpaceTime is available for Windows 2000, XP and Vista but “the Mac version is coming soon”. In our opinion SpaceTime is an interesting free consumer PC software application which represents the state of the art for contemporary 3D technology.

Perfect Fantasy is a nice, well shaped collection of blue and/or pink icon. This collection is very attractive and contains 62 icons in three different formats (PNG, ICO and ICNS). From the website it is possible to download also two wallpapers (blue and pink) for a perfect customization of your desktop. Wubi: one of the best Ubuntu installers for Windows users.

Today, in our Linux page we have posted a brief review about Wubi: a simple and effective Ubuntu installer for Windows users. With just few clicks you can easily install Ubuntu without modifying the partitions on your pc (for this reason there are no -or very low- risks of “fatal errors” for your computer). All the Ubuntu files are stored in just a single folder so it is very simple to uninstall Ubuntu if you decide not to use it anymore. In few words, Wubi allows Linux beginners to try all the positive features of Ubuntu without risking undesirable secondary effects. Recommended!
