How to convert pdf to html on Ubuntu 9.04

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish), we tried to find how to freely convert pdf to html files. Unfortunately we have not been able to discover a satisfying solution. In fact, first of all (1) we upload our complex pdf file (text, color drawing and pictures) on Gmail email and we sent it to ourself. When we opened the email we click on “view as html” option and we were able to read the text (unfortunately too tiny) without drawings and pictures. It was not bad but we were really far from what we were looking for. As second experiment (2) we tried to use Kword and we had (as html) text and pictures but there were many incongruences between the texts and the borders and we missed some phrases. In few words, we had a better look but a worse result. Then (3) we installed pdftohtml using Synaptic Package Manager but unfortunately we were not satisfied from the html file we obtained. At this point we concentrated our researches on a free online solution and in order we tried: “Online conversion tools for Adobe PDF documents“, “convertpdftohtml“, “pdftextonline“, and “pdf-search-engine” but the results were not good. Unfortunately, we dismissed and I confess we could not find a solution to solve the task but we think that the “Kword solution”, if improved, is not far from a good solution in converting the file from pdf to html. How to repair Flash on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish), we have written some easy instructions to repair the flash plugin on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. In fact, after a brand new install on my Acer Aspire Athlon X2 I had big problems in visualizing Flash contents on Firefox 3. I tried to reinstall the plugin different times but the result did not change. Finally, reading a page in ubuntuforums.org I find the right solution for my problem. First of all you have to open Synaptic Package Manager (in System – Administration) and remove all the swfdec packages (in my case swfdec -mozilla and swfdec -gnome). Then, using the Terminal you have to type sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree. Now you restart Firefox and Flash contents will be available again. We believe that this solution is really fast and practical but if you know a better one which could permit us not to install non free code please let us know.

Something to know before the release of Firefox 3.5: how to disable the geo-locating feature.

This week in our Freeware Page we we have written a quick post about disabling geo-locating feature in the upcoming Firefox 3.5. I have always been an enthusiastic supporter of Firefox because I think it is so flexible that I can find any add-on I need for any purpose. I am also sure that the new Firefox 3.5 will be the perfect tool for my everyday navigation but there is something I am a little bit annoyed. In fact, the Firefox 3.5 will contain a default feature (which can be triggered remotely by a website you are visiting) declaring your geo-location everytime you connect to a site. This feature (previously known as project Geode by Mozilla Labs) could be useful for people involved in social networking but it is a potential wasting time feature for all the others. In fact, you have to declare if you want to automatically display your geo-location each time a website triggers this feature. For this reason, if you are not a social network addict, my personal advice is to disable this geo-locating feature as soon as you install (or update to) Firefox 3.5… (it continues in the Freeware Page).

How to install Ubuntu Tweak and Moblock on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty

Today , in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we posted a brief review about installing Ubuntu Tweak and Moblock on Ubuntu 9.04. We have read different websites on these topics but the best are the official ones that we advise you to visit them:

Ubuntu Tweak is the most flexible graphical interface to configure desktop and system options on your Jaunty. On the other side,Moblock is a powerful software to protect your privacy when you surf internet and it is based on a huge list of IP address which are not considered as friendly.
We strongly believe that the most efficient solution is to add the sources on your Software Sources (System – Administration – Software Sources); for Ubuntu Tweak:
1 – using Terminal, import the key sudo apt-key adv –recv-keys –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com FE85409EEAB40ECCB65740816AF0E1940624A220
2 – import the source on the Software Sources

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ubuntu jaunty main

3 – install Ubuntu Tweak (using Terminal)
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
To add Moblock in your sources it is necessary:
1 – import the keys, using Terminal
gpg –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv-keys 9C0042C8
gpg –export –armor 9C0042C8 | sudo apt-key add –
2 – import the source on the Software Sources
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/jre-phoenix/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/jre-phoenix/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
3 – install Moblock (using Terminal)
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install moblock blockcontrol mobloquer

How to install the Linux version of Cooliris add-on in Firefox 3.1

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) , we posted a brief post to focus your attention on Cooliris in its, not well known, Linux version. In fact on Linux, you are not always allowed to install directly Cooliris as Firefox add-on and the same happens when you try to install Cooliris using the Firefox Add-on official webpage In this case, the only solution we have, is represented by surfing on the Cooliris homepage and click on the Linux version in the Downloads Page. The xpi file will be immediately opened and in just few clicks it is installed. Cooliris allows you to search videos, images and photographs in many sites (Google Image Search, YouTube, Flickr, Hulu, online retailers, and other sites), watch them on a 3D wallpaper or on a full-screen slideshow using the toggle button. This program contains also an interesting bunch of channels as News, Sport, Photos of the day, Music Videos, Comedy, etc.. UsingCooliris you can also share your multimedia stuff with friends or keep them in your Favorites. At the moment this Linux version of Cooliris runs on Firefox 3.1+ using Ubuntu 8.04+, Fedora 10.0+ or OpenSuse 11+. Recommended!

A fast guide for beginners to install ClamAV on Ubuntu

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a quick guide to rapidly install ClamAV: one of my favourite and open source antivirus for Linux. We have already written some notes in our previous post “Security package (Rev. 1.2) for Ubuntu: antivirus, firewall and P2P stealth” and in that occasion we decide to suggest an external link. This time we reinstalled a fresh new Ubuntu 8.10 and decided to directly add ClamAV. First of all, it is necessary to run Synaptic Package Manager (in System – Administration) and to search Clam and select clamav and all the extra packages you prefer to install. Read very carefully the description that is visualized each time you click on one of them and select the extra feature you need. Then, with the right button of the mouse, select “mark for installation” and click on Apply in the upper menu bar. After few seconds ClamAV will be correctly installed. Now, if you check on Applications – System Tool you will find a new ClamAV icon whose name is Virus Scanner. Now, if you launch ClamAV you will discover that, unfortunately, it is not possible to upgrade the program without administrative privileges. I solved this “problem” dragging and dropping the ClamAV icon to the upper panel. Then I clicked on the icon using the right button of the mouse and selected the Properties panel. Then, in the “command” space I added sudo before the text clamtk %F that I found already written there (sudo clamtk %F). Now, when you click on the upper panel ClamAV icon, you are able to upgrade your new antivirus in a breeze. Recommended!

AHTEC Lug N011 and Eeebuntu: a perfect sinergy!

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish), we have posted a brief review about eeebuntu and the netbook Lug N011 produced by AHTEC. In fact after some different tests, Frank has really appreciated the results obtained by joining the netbook version of eeebuntu and the Lug N011 in terms of stability and hardware compatibility. Eeebuntu recognized immediately the lan card without the need of any specific drivers ad it was possible to utilize the wi-fi connection. Eeebuntu has been release in three different versions. The first one, the most famous is the Netbook we have used for our tests with the Lug N011, moreover the second version is the standard eeebuntu which contains all the software we are used to finding on the Ubuntu distribution. Last but not least, we tested also the Base version which contains just the basic software and features and, also in this case, we did not find relevant problems. Recommended especially for all the people using a AHTEC Lug N011!
