Save your status, energy and time using the Hibernate shutdown option on Windows XP

Usually, when you shut down your Linux OS, you have the option to Hibernate your computer. Using this option you are 100% sure that, when you power-on again your PC, you will find exactly the same programs, browser tabs and system configuration you. In Windows XP you have the same option but often it is hidden. If you have access to your XP computer as Administrator, you can follow the following instruction to restore it: Start —> Control Panel —> Power Options. Find the Hibernate tab and then click on Enable Hibernation. That’s it!

How to create your personalized Linux OS using SUSE Studio

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we uploaded a brief post about SUSE Studio an online service which allows you to create new distribution based on openSUSE 11.2. The online OS builder allows you to choose between 32 bit or 64 bit system based on SUSE, GNOME, KDE, Minimal X or text only Server. In the next menu you will be asked to choose all the software you prefer (7,876 different packages). After this, you can also choose and personalize, for example: language, keyboard, network, firewall and users. Moreover, you can personalize the boot-up and all the programs you want to automatically autostart. SUSE Studio is very interesting and allows you to create the best Linux OX for all your needs. Something to know before the release of Firefox 3.5: how to disable the geo-locating feature.

This week in our Freeware Page we we have written a quick post about disabling geo-locating feature in the upcoming Firefox 3.5. I have always been an enthusiastic supporter of Firefox because I think it is so flexible that I can find any add-on I need for any purpose. I am also sure that the new Firefox 3.5 will be the perfect tool for my everyday navigation but there is something I am a little bit annoyed. In fact, the Firefox 3.5 will contain a default feature (which can be triggered remotely by a website you are visiting) declaring your geo-location everytime you connect to a site. This feature (previously known as project Geode by Mozilla Labs) could be useful for people involved in social networking but it is a potential wasting time feature for all the others. In fact, you have to declare if you want to automatically display your geo-location each time a website triggers this feature. For this reason, if you are not a social network addict, my personal advice is to disable this geo-locating feature as soon as you install (or update to) Firefox 3.5… (it continues in the Freeware Page).

How to install Easy Peasy (in dual boot mode) on a SDHC card (eee pc 900)

This week in our Linux Page (in Spanish) , we added a brief "manual" about installing Easy Peasy as secondary OS, on an eee pc 900. Before, we tried the installation of eeebuntu but the installation failed because the Install feature is not able to recognize the SDHC card. First of all you have to create a live USB with Easy Peasy using Unetbootin . Then you have to change the bootup BIOS on your PC. In this way, eee pc will boot up Easy Peasy directly. Once running, Easy Peasy will automatically run the "Install it" feature. Easy Peasy was the only OS which was able to read the SDHC and to offer the opportunity to install it directly on the card. You will need about 30-40 minutes to complete the installation. After that it is better to restart the system. Then, we suggest to update Easy Peasy using "Update Manager"; in fact you will discover more than 140 updates ready to be installed. Unfortunately, after updating the OS our Easy Peasy does not recognize the camera and we hope to be able to add some more information about possible solutions during the next days. Last but not least, we also suggest to deselect Ubiquity from the boot up using Preferences – Sessions – Startup Programs and you will not be annoyed by the Install feature each time you boot up your eee pc. Today, in our Freeware Page we have posted a short but (effective) review about WinFlip: a tiny program which allows you to have the same Vista graphical interface for active windows. Personally I do not believe thatWinFlip will change your way of working with XP but it could represent a good graphical solution for all that people who want to upgrade just some XP functions without changing their OS at the moment. Last but not least, since last December, WinFlip has been included into the Vista Transformation Pack the famous compilation of programs which allows to full enjoy the main Vista graphical effects on your XP. Anyway, I believe that the installation of the complete Vista Transformation Pack could be negative (in terms of slower performances) for many computer using XP.

How to install Ubuntu 7.10 on a USB Key!

After only few days from the release of Ubuntu 7.10, the pendrivelinux.com has released the new manual to install this new version of the famous Linux distro on a USB key and we have posted a short but effective review about this new manual on our Linux Page (in Spanish). As usual the instruction contained on the site are very clear and simple to follow. We have been able to create our Ubuntu 7.10 Key in less than 40 minutes and without any particular problem. Unfortunately, we were not able to save the changes we had made to personalize our USB key but we really enjoy the possibilities offered by a so powerful OS as Ubuntu (if someone knows how to save the changes, please, post a comment – Thanks). Strongly recommended!

GP2X versus PSP: a long term match!

This week, in our Linux Page we have posted an effective review about GP2X: the Linux challenger against the proprietary PSP. We personally think that this new open source gaming device developed by a Korean company. The GP2X is very easy to use and in a long term perspective, it has many interesting possibilities (multimedia, MP3, etc..) if compared with PSP. When purchased with its cradle, it can easily be connected to any USB devices (as keyboards, external Hd, etc..). Moreover the open source platform can potentially offer nver ending solutions for new applications or games. At the moment the games available for this platform are not so many as the games for the PSP but we believe that in six-eight months the number of games will dramatically increase. Last but not least, the new GP2X-F200 has a crystal bright touch screen with functions. Recommended as reliable open source alternative to PSP!

Krusader 1.80.0: an advanced advanced twin panel file manager for KDE!

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief but complete review about Krusader: one of the best file manager for KDE. As we all know, in the next Ubuntu 7.10 we will find the new Dolphin beyond to the traditional Konqueror (the KDE file manager and universal viewer) but we would like to prefer to keep your attention on this twin panel file manager. The complete list of Krusader’s features is so long that we prefer to underline just the main ones. In fact, two of the most interesting features are the remote connection manager and the special function for synchronizing directories which are very simple to use. Moreover the possibility of creating a customized menu gets Krusader very user friendly. Recommended!
