What’s better than testing? For me nothing!

For this reason, let me introduce some “unusual” Linux distribution proposed by Jesse Afolabi @Jesseflb via Techmint.

VeltOS and PapyrOS are based on Arch but the last one is in its pre-alpha testing so it’s not suggested for beginners.

Moreover, we may decide to begin 2016 with Korora that is still one of my favorite projects also after so many years since the first release.

Last but not least, we have Solus OS 2 that it is not the most Linux distribution I tested but it is stable and really well built.

How to test Moblin 2.0 beta – an experimental Linux OS, optimized for Netbook and Mobile Internet Devices (MID).

Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we posted a brief tutorial about the beta version of Moblin: a new Linux OS, -by the Linux Foundation and supported by Intel to increase the diffusion of its Atom processor- which has been developed especially for MID and Netbooks. Moblin, in its Beta version looks stable and full of features (Wimax included) and it is in constant development. At the moment we suggest to test it on a USB key. For this, after dowloading the .img file we can us imageWriter (Applications – Accessories – ImageWriter). If you need to install ImageWriter, please use Synaptics (System – Administration – Synaptics Package Manager) and in the search file type usb-imagewriter and install this program using the right button on your mouse. In our opinion, Moblin 2.0 beta, is realy well developed, all the menus are intuitive and easy to use and the graphics is more than sufficient. At the moment Moblin guys are testing this new version on Acer Aspire One, Asus eeePC 901, 1000H, Dell Mini 9, MSI Wind, Lenovo S10, Samsung NC10, HP Mini 1010 and 1120NR and we hope they could extend the Netbooks models in the near future. How to install a new Linux distribution -Linux4One- on your Netbook Acer Aspire One

Today, on our Linux Page (in Spanish), we have posted an enthusiastic review about Linux4One a very stable new Linux distribution which represents a real opportunity if you want to test a new OS on Your Acer Aspire One. Linux4One website is essential but well structured; unfortunately it does not contains many information so the best thing yo do is downloading their specially developed Ubuntu based Linux4One and test it. This particular distribution, with a customized Kernel, perfectly runs on our Aspire One: we did not find any problem with the hardware and smoothly passed all the tests. Last but not least, the Italian guys are developing a Linux4One special edition which should be mounted directly from a Usb key, we hpe it will be ready ASAP. Damn Small Linux 4.2.5: the new updated version!

Damn Small LinuxToday, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a review about the new version (4.2.5) of Damn Small Linux. Damn Small Linux is one of our favourite distribution due to its capability to run on very old PC as 386/486/Pentium with very few hardware resources. This version has updated some features as Monkey Webserver 0.9.2 and is incredibly stable (as the previous ones, I must say). According to distrowatch.com, in the last 12 months Damn Small Linux has been the 10th most downloaded (and consequently used) Linux version also because, with no costs, many people are converting old Windows based machines to new up-to-date computers. Anyway, Damn Small Linux is based on Knoppix but is smaller and contains many improvements. Last but not least, I would like to focus your attention on the five different subversions available:

– dsl.iso is the standard isolinux version

– slinux.iso uses syslinux instead of isolinux (for very old PC’s)

– vmx.zip can be run in VMware Player

– embedded.zip contains QUEMU for running inside Windows

– frugal_lite.sh is the network install script and requires tomsrtbt linux: http://www.toms.net/rb/. AddThis mp3 link

Ubuntu iES: a terrific -Spanish- Ubuntu on a pendrive!

Ubuntu iESToday, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief review about Ubuntu iES, an interesting Live Ubuntu which can be loaded on a small (1GB) pendrive. This particular Live version has been built for Spanish speaking users. Ubuntu iES is completely automatic, in fact its software completely manages the installation. Actually, when the pendrive loads the Ubuntu iES you can easily choose between Gnome, xfce4, Enlightenment; moreover, it is also possible to decide the right graphic card and the appropriate drivers for WIFI. Last but not least, Ubuntu iES website contains simple and clear instructions about saving all your settings and data for the next live session. Personally we recommend this live version of Ubuntu to all Spanish speaking users because it is not simple to find (around the web) a better Linux distribution on a pendrive. How to install Ubuntu 7.10 on a USB Key!

Ubuntu 7.10After only few days from the release of Ubuntu 7.10, the pendrivelinux.com has released the new manual to install this new version of the famous Linux distro on a USB key and we have posted a short but effective review about this new manual on our Linux Page (in Spanish). As usual the instruction contained on the site are very clear and simple to follow. We have been able to create our Ubuntu 7.10 Key in less than 40 minutes and without any particular problem. Unfortunately, we were not able to save the changes we had made to personalize our USB key but we really enjoy the possibilities offered by a so powerful OS as Ubuntu (if someone knows how to save the changes, please, post a comment – Thanks). Ubuntu 7.04: a complete Linux on a USB PenDrive

Ubuntu 6.10 on a USB PenDriveToday, in our Linux Page, we want talk again about bootable Linux on pendrives. This time we discovered that the guys from http://pendrivelinux.com/ released a new USB portable Linux: Ubuntu 6.10. We tried to use Ubuntu 7.04 instead 6.10 and… it works (in our test: Windows installation on 1GB pendrive)! As for Knoppix 5.1.0 (see our post on January 26, 2007) also this portable version of Ubuntu 7.04 is easy to be installed on a USB key and it’s full of interesting features. For the installation you have to carefully follow the instruction contained on the specific pendrivelinux pages (more instruction also available for installation using Linux). Please don’t be worried after the first reading because all the necessary steps are well explained and if you follow them it’s really not possible to make mistakes! Enjoy it! AddThis

An alternative and more effective way to kill a locked program in Kubuntu: using the PID

We use Linux because the possibility of crashes is lower than in other OS but sometimes some programs decide to lock themselves causing different problems to our PC usability.. When it happens we usually decide to use ksysguard but it doesn’t end our program. Today, in our Linux Page we have added a post about another way to solve these kind of matters using the PID. The post is short but we think it could be very useful for many Linux users. In fact, using the PID to kill a program is less time waster than restart the pc. Knoppix 5.1.1Knoppix 5.1.1 is one of the most interesting and complete Linux built to be booted directly from a USB key. This Linux version is very easy to be installed on a USB key and it’s full of interesting features. Moreover, it can be personalised adding new programs or simply personalising it with new themes or the icons you most like! In our Linux Page you find all the information to install and enjoy it! After few days with Knoppix 5.1.1 I am sure you will start loving Linux and all its wonderful features! AddThis
