How to create free different local telephone numbers linked to your Skype identity: Ring2Skype
This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish), we posted a brief post about Ring2Skype. Ring2Skype is a new free service which allows you to create local telephone numbers linked to your Skype user-id. After filling in few datas you get a telephone number in 31 different countries. In your email you will find a welcome letter with a summary of all the data of your new Ring2Skype account, your new telephone number and an extension to share with your local contacts. In this way, a person located in a different country could call you spending just for a local call. On the other hand it is possible to create more local telephone numbers so all your contacts in different countries could be in contact with you as if you are living in their same city. Recommended if it will remain free also in the future!

Use chkrootkit to fight against rare (but always possible) rootkits on your Linux PCs!
This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish), we would like to focus your attention on chkrootkit, an interesting software for Linux which can really help you to detect malicious rootkits on your Linux PC. Unfortunately, the last update we have found on the chkrootkit homepage is dated December 2007 but we hope to see a new release during the 2009. To check if you have chkrootkit already installed, type chkrootkit on you Terminal:
desktop:~$ chkrootkit
and you certainly will receive this message:
The program ‘chkrootkit’ is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install chkrootkit
Follow the above instructions and you will be ready to execute the software just typing:
sudo chkrootkit
Please, note that, at our first scan on Ubuntu 8.10, we found a false positive:
Checking `sniffer’… lo: not promisc and no packet sniffer sockets
eth0: PACKET SNIFFER(/sbin/dhclient3[4835])
Do not worry! This (unfortunately frequent) false positive has already been discussed by the community at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=556517
and
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=270340
If you know other good anti-rootkits, please be so kind, to add a comment on this post. We are really interested to discover new “security software” (especially anti-rootkit) for Linux machines!

Stixy: a collaborative online application to easily share ideas and more..
In many collaborative projects it is often necessary to share ideas, images, documents, ect.. but, as everyone could testify: ideas fastly flight away; it is not easy to remember video and photographs and so on… In a traditional office a common board could effectively help to coordinate trends and share photos but when working in internet it is high the possibility that many of this stuff will be lost before next meeting with colleagues. Moreover, now it is possible to use Stixy, a simple intuitive but powerful online application which allows you to display and share all you want (notes, photos, documents, to-do lists and also music) on the web. We tried Stixy (better its Beta version) and we enjoyed it a lot: clean, easy to share and positively influenced the mood in our team. For some more information you can read a brief review in our Freeware Page. Something to try!

Skype 2.0 and Google Earth 4.2: two new (finally) updated versions for Linux!
In our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief but complete review (with all the links for the downloads) about the new Linux version of Skype and Google Earth. Finally, in Skype 2.0, not only we could use the audio and chat features but also the video option using our favorite webcam also in the Linux version. The new Google Earth 4.2 has been implemented with new options as Clouds, Radar, Conditions & Forecast and Information. This new Google Earth version seem to be very complete and the 50,000 (not bad !) cities now covered will be more during the next months. I personally think that this new versions of Skype and Google Earth cancel the gap between Windows and Linux we all have stood till now. Well done!

GP2X versus PSP: a long term match!
This week, in our Linux Page we have posted an effective review about GP2X: the Linux challenger against the proprietary PSP. We personally think that this new open source gaming device developed by a Korean company. The GP2X is very easy to use and in a long term perspective, it has many interesting possibilities (multimedia, MP3, etc..) if compared with PSP. When purchased with its cradle, it can easily be connected to any USB devices (as keyboards, external Hd, etc..). Moreover the open source platform can potentially offer nver ending solutions for new applications or games. At the moment the games available for this platform are not so many as the games for the PSP but we believe that in six-eight months the number of games will dramatically increase. Last but not least, the new GP2X-F200 has a crystal bright touch screen with functions. Recommended as reliable open source alternative to PSP!
Comodo backup for Windows XP: the freeware you need to have!
Today, in our Freeware Page we add a review on one of the free softwares offered by Comodo. Comodo backup is very simple to use but effective freeware which allows you to easily store sensitive data on a external Hard Disk or on a multisession DVD. If you prefer you can also use the ftp feature. The graphic interface is essential but clean and in just few clicks you are able to start store files and/or folders. Last but not least if some troubles happen to the hard disk you can restore them directly from your pc with one click. Free, Easy and Fast!
Krusader 1.80.0: an advanced advanced twin panel file manager for KDE!
This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief but complete review about Krusader: one of the best file manager for KDE. As we all know, in the next Ubuntu 7.10 we will find the new Dolphin beyond to the traditional Konqueror (the KDE file manager and universal viewer) but we would like to prefer to keep your attention on this twin panel file manager. The complete list of Krusader’s features is so long that we prefer to underline just the main ones. In fact, two of the most interesting features are the remote connection manager and the special function for synchronizing directories which are very simple to use. Moreover the possibility of creating a customized menu gets Krusader very user friendly. Recommended!
Hardinfo: simple, efficient hardware and system profiler for Linux.
Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief but effective review about Hardinfo: the best system and OS profiler we have never found for Linux. Hardinfo is a very useful program specifically created to deeply scan your hardware and create reports in HTML or in plain text formats. We suggest to use this software before upgrading your pc or when you suspect something is wrong with your hardware. Moreover, Hardinfo let you to easily benchmark your pc performance with just a click. Last but not least, you can download the source code or, if you prefer the autopackage file (suggested) which will automatically install the program in your computer.
AcetoneISO and GnomeBaker: two terrific CD/DVD image manipulators for Ubuntu!
Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief but effective post about AcetoneISO2 which is the Ubuntu version of one of the most powerful CD/DVD image manipulators for Linux. Acetone ISO2 works also with NRG, BIN, MDF and CCD proprietary extensions and it can convert them in free ISO images ready to be ripped. AcetoneISO has many features but one of the most attractive fore us is the possibility to encrypt/decrypt an image. We also appreciated the feature which lets you to split/merge your image in different segments. We successfully tested it without big problems but, unfortunately, we read on the net that sometimes there are some unfixed bugs so, if you are in trouble, we suggest to try also GnomeBaker. This program is more stable and very easy to use but contains less features than AcetoneISO. Enjoy them!
