Mojopack 2.0: a software to create a portable Windows XP VS Damn Small Linux

Today, in our Freeware Page, we have posted a brief review about Mojopack a free (for 90 days, sic!) software which allows to bring your personal OS (with all the configurations) practically everywhere with you. To use Mojopac you need a working Windows XP OS, an USB portable disk or key and the Mojopac software. After the download, you can install it on your USB key in just few minutes. Mojopac works sufficiently silky on USB 2 connections but if you have time and are very patient you can use it with USB 1.1 ports. Last but not least, be sure to have administrator access privileges but some new versions, able to solve this problem, are in the plans. On the other hand we want to focus your attention on Damn Small Linux which is 100% free and can be intalled on CD, DVD, USB devices or simply embedded on your Windows XP computer. After some tests we really preferred this Linux solution because is completely free and very intuitive to use after just a couple of hours. Recommended!

Alien-GUI: an useful software tool to grafically convert deb and tar packages to RPM

Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we added a brief news about Alien-GUI which is an interesting software developed to grafically (and automatically) convert tar, deb in RPM. As you already know, RPM is the package manager used to install software on different Linux system as (but not only) Mandriva, Fedora, Red Hat and Suse. Before installing Alien GUI, it is necessary to install Alien directly from Synaptics Package Manager (System – Administration). Alien GUi is very simple to use thanks to its intuitive graphic interface and it passed our test when we use it on a Mandriva. To sum up Alien Gui is a useful tool that sometimes could help all us to fastly solve some package compatibility problems in just few clicks. Recommended!

Today, in our Freeware Page we posted the first part of a brief research we made to discover the free online services, now available, to create webpages and posts. In particular, in this Part 1 we tested http://disposablewebpage.com/ and http://posterous.com/. Disposablewebpage is a very particular website builder because each website you create, has a life of just 90 days. It could be useful for all that temporary projects you want to share with your friends for a brief period or to reach specific goals in a bigger plan. Disposablewebpage is very simple to use but the graphic results are very basic. On the other hand, disposablewebpage allows you to invite your friends or your colleagues in order to completely share the website and the project. In our point of view, Posterous is even more interesting because it is so simple to use that everyone can develop his/her own post. We tried posterous and we were able to create and update our new test post in not more than five minutes. You can post just using your email (gmail.com, yahoo.com,hotmail.com, or aol .com); you have to insert the title in the subject field and attach all the images you want directly on your email. How to install Ubuntu Tweak and Moblock on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty

Today , in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we posted a brief review about installing Ubuntu Tweak and Moblock on Ubuntu 9.04. We have read different websites on these topics but the best are the official ones that we advise you to visit them:

Ubuntu Tweak is the most flexible graphical interface to configure desktop and system options on your Jaunty. On the other side,Moblock is a powerful software to protect your privacy when you surf internet and it is based on a huge list of IP address which are not considered as friendly.
We strongly believe that the most efficient solution is to add the sources on your Software Sources (System – Administration – Software Sources); for Ubuntu Tweak:
1 – using Terminal, import the key sudo apt-key adv –recv-keys –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com FE85409EEAB40ECCB65740816AF0E1940624A220
2 – import the source on the Software Sources

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ubuntu jaunty main

3 – install Ubuntu Tweak (using Terminal)
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
To add Moblock in your sources it is necessary:
1 – import the keys, using Terminal
gpg –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv-keys 9C0042C8
gpg –export –armor 9C0042C8 | sudo apt-key add –
2 – import the source on the Software Sources

3 – install Moblock (using Terminal)
sudo aptitude update

How to activate Ctrl+Alt+Backspace on your Linux OS

Today, in our Linux Page, we posted a brief tip (in Spanish) about Ctrl+Alt+Backspace function and how to activate it by default. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace is very useful when you want to change your user or restart Xorg without shutting down your PC. To activate the Ctrl+Alt+Backspace function it is necessary to launch the Terminal and type:

$ sudo aptitude install dontzap -y

and, to activate the keyboard, just:

$ sudo dontzap -disable (yes, it is strange but -disable- is the right command)

How to install the Linux version of Cooliris add-on in Firefox 3.1

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) , we posted a brief post to focus your attention on Cooliris in its, not well known, Linux version. In fact on Linux, you are not always allowed to install directly Cooliris as Firefox add-on and the same happens when you try to install Cooliris using the Firefox Add-on official webpage In this case, the only solution we have, is represented by surfing on the Cooliris homepage and click on the Linux version in the Downloads Page. The xpi file will be immediately opened and in just few clicks it is installed. Cooliris allows you to search videos, images and photographs in many sites (Google Image Search, YouTube, Flickr, Hulu, online retailers, and other sites), watch them on a 3D wallpaper or on a full-screen slideshow using the toggle button. This program contains also an interesting bunch of channels as News, Sport, Photos of the day, Music Videos, Comedy, etc.. UsingCooliris you can also share your multimedia stuff with friends or keep them in your Favorites. At the moment this Linux version of Cooliris runs on Firefox 3.1+ using Ubuntu 8.04+, Fedora 10.0+ or OpenSuse 11+. Recommended!

QuotePad a useful portable freeware to take notes “on the go” when in internet.

This week, in our Freeware Page , we have added a short review about QuotePad which is a very interesting notepad that can be used to better organizing your online day by day work especially when in internet. In particular this light freeware allows you also to copy and paste large amounts of texts from web-pages and automatically recording the web-address. After coping the text you have only to go into your QuotePad and paste it using Ctr-Shift-Q. QuotePad directly memorizes the time of your “cut and paste” and allows you to write the most appropriate title for each of your notes. Moreover, clicking on “stay on top” (on the right in the upper bar) you can also stitch your notes above the browser you are using. Recommended.

How to share notes and images using thepiratebay.org satellite websites: PasteBay and bayimg

Today, in our Freeware Page, we added a brief review about two, multiplatform free services offered by th piratebay.org. The first one is PasteBay which allows you to quickly create, save and protect (in a basic way) your own notes when browsing on internet. PasteBay is very intuitive, quick to use and effective. The only “trouble” could be the simple http connection (instead of https) and the password you choose that could be weak if you do not choose it in a proper way. The second online service offered by thepiratebay.org is bayimg which allows you to store images for your websites in 140 different formats. Each image could be uploaded till 100MB so it is possible to save online also high resolution images. We have spent five days testing the features offered by these two websites and we have really not found any problem or bug. Recommended!

A fast guide for beginners to install ClamAV on Ubuntu

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a quick guide to rapidly install ClamAV: one of my favourite and open source antivirus for Linux. We have already written some notes in our previous post “Security package (Rev. 1.2) for Ubuntu: antivirus, firewall and P2P stealth” and in that occasion we decide to suggest an external link. This time we reinstalled a fresh new Ubuntu 8.10 and decided to directly add ClamAV. First of all, it is necessary to run Synaptic Package Manager (in System – Administration) and to search Clam and select clamav and all the extra packages you prefer to install. Read very carefully the description that is visualized each time you click on one of them and select the extra feature you need. Then, with the right button of the mouse, select “mark for installation” and click on Apply in the upper menu bar. After few seconds ClamAV will be correctly installed. Now, if you check on Applications – System Tool you will find a new ClamAV icon whose name is Virus Scanner. Now, if you launch ClamAV you will discover that, unfortunately, it is not possible to upgrade the program without administrative privileges. I solved this “problem” dragging and dropping the ClamAV icon to the upper panel. Then I clicked on the icon using the right button of the mouse and selected the Properties panel. Then, in the “command” space I added sudo before the text clamtk %F that I found already written there (sudo clamtk %F). Now, when you click on the upper panel ClamAV icon, you are able to upgrade your new antivirus in a breeze. Recommended!
