PPASearch: la mejor herramienta para buscar repositorios PPA en Ubuntu

Hay veces que queremos instalar alguna aplicación y no sabemos muy bien cuales son los repositorios correctos PPA de Launchpad. gracias a PPASearch esto se hace todo muy muy fácil. Lo primero que hay que hacer es instalar esta aplicación en nuestra Distro con los siguientes comandos:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wrinkliez/ppasearch
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ppasearch

Cuando ya tengamos instalada esta aplicación, podemos buscar el repositorio que mas nos interese, para hacer eso lo único será ejecutar PPASearch y el nombre del programa de lo cual buscamos el repositorio: ejemplo

ppasearch skype

Buscando por los repositorios de Skype me salieron diferentes repositorios y cada uno identificado con un numero, para instalar alguno de ellos, lo único será elegir el numero correspondiente y PPASearch se ocupará de instalar el repositorio seleccionado. ¡Muy buena herramienta!

How to repair a bad upgrade on Ubuntu!

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we posted some tips about repairing a bad Linux upgrade. In fact, it is rare but sometimes, unfortunately, it happens. I mean one or more error during an upgrade installation on Ubuntu. In my case the problem was caused by a blackout and a battery which did not worked properly. When I restarted the PC it worked only in text mode and it asked me the login and the password to enter into the Ubuntu root mode. Obviously, as usual, I typed the requested data and then, after reading how to solve similar problems on internet, I decided to go forward with sudo apt-get update. At this point Ubuntu advised me that something had been wrong during the last update and suggested to try with sudo dpkg –configure -a. I followed the suggestions and I concluded the “repair session” with sudo apt-get upgrade –fix-broken. Fifteen minutes later and after rebooting all the “bad upgrade” problems were solved. Recommended!

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we added a post about a new fantastic online service to manage and add software sources to your Sources List (System – Administration – Software Sources). Adding the right repository sources in Ubuntu is essential for a more practical and fast management of your OS. In fact, using the correct sources list you can be sure that your system is always updated and safe. RepoGen has been created for all these reasons. It also automatically compiles all the necessary GPG keys and you have just to add them (one by one) running the suggested command in the Terminal. We tested RepoGen on two different PCs running both Ubuntu 8.04 & Ubuntu 9.04 and were able to update our Software Sources in less of 15 minutes and without discovering a single problem. To conclude we strongly believe that RepoGen is an online service that can help you to save a lot of time and keep your Ubuntu always up-to-date! Strongly recommended!

How to install Ubuntu Tweak and Moblock on Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty

Today , in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we posted a brief review about installing Ubuntu Tweak and Moblock on Ubuntu 9.04. We have read different websites on these topics but the best are the official ones that we advise you to visit them:

Ubuntu Tweak is the most flexible graphical interface to configure desktop and system options on your Jaunty. On the other side,Moblock is a powerful software to protect your privacy when you surf internet and it is based on a huge list of IP address which are not considered as friendly.
We strongly believe that the most efficient solution is to add the sources on your Software Sources (System – Administration – Software Sources); for Ubuntu Tweak:
1 – using Terminal, import the key sudo apt-key adv –recv-keys –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com FE85409EEAB40ECCB65740816AF0E1940624A220
2 – import the source on the Software Sources

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/tualatrix/ubuntu jaunty main

3 – install Ubuntu Tweak (using Terminal)
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak
To add Moblock in your sources it is necessary:
1 – import the keys, using Terminal
gpg –keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com –recv-keys 9C0042C8
gpg –export –armor 9C0042C8 | sudo apt-key add –
2 – import the source on the Software Sources
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/jre-phoenix/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/jre-phoenix/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
3 – install Moblock (using Terminal)
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install moblock blockcontrol mobloquer

AHTEC Lug N011 and Eeebuntu: a perfect sinergy!

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish), we have posted a brief review about eeebuntu and the netbook Lug N011 produced by AHTEC. In fact after some different tests, Frank has really appreciated the results obtained by joining the netbook version of eeebuntu and the Lug N011 in terms of stability and hardware compatibility. Eeebuntu recognized immediately the lan card without the need of any specific drivers ad it was possible to utilize the wi-fi connection. Eeebuntu has been release in three different versions. The first one, the most famous is the Netbook we have used for our tests with the Lug N011, moreover the second version is the standard eeebuntu which contains all the software we are used to finding on the Ubuntu distribution. Last but not least, we tested also the Base version which contains just the basic software and features and, also in this case, we did not find relevant problems. Recommended especially for all the people using a AHTEC Lug N011!

Appnr: an useful webpage where to find the best -ready to be installed- programs for Gnome, KDE and XFCE!

Today in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief review about http://appnr.com/ an online resource page where it is possible to find a huge amount of programs ready to be installed. In few words it is possible to directly install them with just a click on the the download button on the right of the page. To take advantage of this feature please, check (once a time) to have apt url installed. If you have not apt url on your PC you can install it by terminal with sudo apt-get install apturl. Moreover the appnr.com website is very easy to explore with a very intuitive graphical menu on the left side of the screen and a powerful internal search engine. Appnr.com also contains a very practical search option which allows you to find the programs already separated between Gnome, KDE and XFCE. To sum up it is possible to affirm that appnr.com could be very useful especially when we don’t find .deb packages and don’t want to spend time manually installing programs. Anyway, to keep always my Ubuntu updated, I personally prefer to directly add repositories in Third Party Software (in System – Software Sources). Something to try!

Project Neon: the fastest way to install Amarok 2.0 on your Kubuntu!

This week, in our Linux Page (in Spanish), Frank has added an interesting post about Project Neon which is the best solution for people who desire to have the new nightly builds service for Amarok. Following the simple instructions contained in Project Neon you will able to enjoy the last developing packages for Amarok 2.0 without waiting the release of the stable version. Project Neon also provides simple instructions to install Amarok 2.0 on your Ubuntu in just five minutes. Last but not least, it is necessary to remember that Amarok 2.0 is not in its final version yet and it could potentially create some serious problems on your PC. To install it just add:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/project-neon/ubuntu hardy main

in your sources (/etc/apt/sources.list) and the install it using the following command lines:

$ sudo apt-get uptdate

$ sudo apt-get install amarok-nightly

How to add a cool “MAC OS X” dock in your Ubuntu: Avant Window Navigator (AWN)!

Linux is Linux but the MAC OS X dock has always fascinated us. For this reason, in our Linux Page, we posted few notes explaining how to insert a “MAC OS X” dock in the Linux desktops. Last May we posted a previous review about KSmoothDock, KoolDock, Superkaramba (and its nice Tuxbar) but now we think that the best -state of the art- dock is represented by AWN. This program can be installed very quickly ant it is fast to configure. To use AWN is necessary to go to System – Preferences – Appearance and select the Normal or the Extra options. Then, following our simple notes, you can start using AWN with just few lines in the Terminal. For AWN customization you can add some themes from http://www.gnome-look.org/. Beware: before installing AWN, read very carefully the information contained in AWN installation notes because, if something goes wrong, it is not simple to reverse to your original dock configuration! AWN is not for everyone but, we are sure, it is worth the risk for many.

Ubuntu iES: a terrific -Spanish- Ubuntu on a pendrive!

Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief review about Ubuntu iES, an interesting Live Ubuntu which can be loaded on a small (1GB) pendrive. This particular Live version has been built for Spanish speaking users. Ubuntu iES is completely automatic, in fact its software completely manages the installation. Actually, when the pendrive loads the Ubuntu iES you can easily choose between Gnome, xfce4, Enlightenment; moreover, it is also possible to decide the right graphic card and the appropriate drivers for WIFI. Last but not least, Ubuntu iES website contains simple and clear instructions about saving all your settings and data for the next live session. Personally we recommend this live version of Ubuntu to all Spanish speaking users because it is not simple to find (around the web) a better Linux distribution on a pendrive. As usual, please, inform us if you know something better!

gOS

In our personal opinion gOS could be the -OS + hardware solution- for everyone. In fact we do not think useful to distinguish tech developed countries for the personal income of their citizens. Everyday we do meet many people with big problems in using pcs and internet also in the most developed countries so why do not spread new technologies using a simplified (we mean simpler to use, not a less featured Linux) OS which can run using cheap hardware? gOS could be one of the possible solution. This week in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a detailed review about this new (not so new because it has been built on Ubuntu) OS and we also give some technical information about transforming your Ubuntu in gOS (Beware! We were not able to downgrade to Ubuntu so, if you are not an expert, consider as definitive your Ubuntu changes to gOS!!) gOS is clean, easily (and immediately) usable OS with many intuitive icons which simplify the way of using your pc. gOS integrates many Google online services as Mail, Docs, Calendar, Maps, Docs, Products, News and other Web 2.0 websites as Meebo, YouTube, Blogger, Wikipedia, etc.. In few words this OS hasn’t any new “revolutionary” feature but uses -at their best- many Web 2.0 websites. Highly recommended (and not only to the youngest and the elders)!
