Clonezilla-SysRescCDClonezilla-SysRescCD is something we have been looking for since months. In our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief (full of links) review about this rescue Cd in its 1.3.0 version. Clonezilla-SysRescCD is a very interesting merge (multi boot CD) between Clonezilla and SystemRescueCD which allows you to solve many (better quite all, for what we read) “disasters”; that can be made by everyday pc users like us. Just to sum up the features contained in Clonezilla-SysRescCD we add some brief notes about the two different “parts”; contained in it. Clonezilla is a fast and reliable OpenSource clone system (OCS) which supports ext2, ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs, fat and ntfs partitions. On the other hand SystemRescueCD, based on a bootable Linux OS, allows you to repair your system and/or recover your data after a crash. We simulated some “disasters”; on an old Pentium4 (running Windows XP) and the results we obtained were substantially very positive. AddThis mp3 link

NimbleX: a customizable Linux (Slackware based) Live CD

NimbleXIn our Linux Page we have posted a brief review about NimbleX: a customizable Live CD based on Slackware. To build your own distro you have only to connect to NimbleX site and follow the simple instructions on the screen. The number of available programs is not huge but with a couple of tests you can built a very good personalized Live CD without knowing anything about programming (unfortunately, it is possible to create only one Live CD every day). You can also customize the background and the boot audio greeting using your favorite images and messages. NimbleX is so easy and fast to use that it’s a pleasure to use it. Recommended! AddThis

Lubi: the Linux based Ubuntu Installer

LubiLubi is a useful tool for all people who like to experiment different Linux OS on their PCs. In particular Lubi has been thought to let you install Ubuntu in just few clicks and without risking annoying “secondary effects” on your computer. In our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a small but effective review with all the necessary links to the Lubi project and we have also listed all the Linux OS (PCLinuxOS 2007 32-bit, openSUSE 10.2 32-bit, Gentoo 2007.0 32-bit, etc..) already tested for a safe -Lubi- use. PeaZip LogoToday, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have post a review about PeaZip: a terrific program which is able to solve many common problems when extracting certain types of archives such as ACE, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, ISO, Java archives (JAR, EAR, WAR), Linux installers (DEB, PET/PUP, RPM, SLP), LHA, LZH, Open Office file types, PAK/PK3/PK4, RAR, Windows installers (NSIS, some MSI), Z/TZ. This program was developed in two different versions: for Windows (XP and Vista) and for Linux. Moreover a powerful portable/standalone version (for both Windows and Linux) is available. Last but not least, using PeaZip you will be also able to create 7Z, 7Z-sfx, BZip2, GZip/TGZ, PAQ8F, PAQ8JD, PAQ8L, PEA, QUAD, split (.001), TAR, ZIP archives. Nicotine+This week, in our Linux Page, we posted two interesting reviews Mepis 6.5 Logoby Frank. In the first we analyze the new Mepis 6.5 in its Spanish version. The implements contained in this new version are impressive: Mepis 6.5 is well structured (the software included can help the users at work as in his-her home goals) and very powerful with its new hardware recognition function. For this reason, we think that in the near future Mepis will become one of the most used Linux between beginners. In the second post, Frank explains how to install Nicotine+ in different Ubuntu (Kubuntu) releases. Nicotine+ is actually considered as the natural heir of the -old- glorious Napster, it’s free and released for both Linux and Windows. Personally I continue to prefer Utorrent but I sincerely believe that Nicotine+ is one of best P2P clients available today, in few words: something to try! AddThis

DreamLinux 2.2 MME: a new interesting Linux CD distribution in Portuguese and English

DreamLinux LogoIn our Linux page Frank posted a detailed review about DreamLinux 2.2 MME (multimedia edition). This distribution, available in Portuguese and English has a very clean graphical interface and is built to facilitate Linux beginners. In fact, not only DreamLinux is very updated for office pourposes but it contains many useful application for multimedia, programming, science and graphics. Moreover, DreamLinux has an “easy install” resource which easily help you to install new compatible Linux applications. The tutorials page (written in English) contains many useful tips for DreamLinux beginners. We like DreamLinux especially because the packages are updated and because it offers good graphic interfaces.

PCLinuxOS 2007 Test 2: the new live CD to try!

This week in our Linux page we have posted a review about the “test 2” version of the new PCLinux 2007. This distro is well built and we weren’t able to find any bugs. PCLinux 2007 is built on the Kernel 2.6.18.6-dev5 and has a good 3D graphics support. Moreover it contains more features than the previous one and it’s very easy to use and personalize. For these reasons we think that it really is one of the most complete and stable distribution we have recently found on the net!

An alternative and more effective way to kill a locked program in Kubuntu: using the PID

We use Linux because the possibility of crashes is lower than in other OS but sometimes some programs decide to lock themselves causing different problems to our PC usability.. When it happens we usually decide to use ksysguard but it doesn’t end our program. Today, in our Linux Page we have added a post about another way to solve these kind of matters using the PID. The post is short but we think it could be very useful for many Linux users. In fact, using the PID to kill a program is less time waster than restart the pc. IEs4Linux: a wonderful solution to have Internet Explorer running in Linux!

IE and LinuxToday, in the Linux Page, Frank has posted a very interesting review about IEs4Linux. In fact sometimes we have to use IE in websites created only for IE. The post is very detailed and contains all the instruction to install IEs4Linux in Ubuntu and Kubuntu. Obviously, we personally prefer Firefox but IE is an essential feature to “surf” the web also when we use Linux.
