QGRUBEditor is one of the most interesting system tool for Linux I have met during the last two months. For this reason I decided to post a review in our Linux Page (in Spanish). This System tool is simple to install, easier to use and the results are very enjoyable. In our tests, we were able to easily modify the GRUB boot loader without damaging our OS. QGRUBEditor has a special feature which allows you to backup (highly recommended) your actual GRUB configuration before starting playing with its tools. If something goes wrong you can restore your previous GRUB just clicking on the restore button. Last but not least, QGRUBEditor allows you to add a password to rise the security of your GRUB.

Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief review about Ubuntu iES, an interesting Live Ubuntu which can be loaded on a small (1GB) pendrive. This particular Live version has been built for Spanish speaking users. Ubuntu iES is completely automatic, in fact its software completely manages the installation. Actually, when the pendrive loads the Ubuntu iES you can easily choose between Gnome, xfce4, Enlightenment; moreover, it is also possible to decide the right graphic card and the appropriate drivers for WIFI. Last but not least, Ubuntu iES website contains simple and clear instructions about saving all your settings and data for the next live session. Personally we recommend this live version of Ubuntu to all Spanish speaking users because it is not simple to find (around the web) a better Linux distribution on a pendrive. As usual, please, inform us if you know something better!

Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief review about two interesting websites: OpenSourceLiving.com and Iconlet.com. In particular, OpenSourceLiving contains a library of 130 multiplatform (Windows, Linux, OS X) open source software. The main menu is very intuitive and all the different sections are very simple to explore. Moreover you have the possibility to suggest open source projects which are not included in the website yet. On the other
hand, Iconlet is a search engine dedicated to icons released under the Gnu, Creative or Eclipse licenses. The “advanced search” option allows you to organize your search preselecting the image resolution, the graphic format and the license. This particular website also offers a useful plug-in for a Iconlet dedicated search field in Firefox. Last but not least, for each icon found, Iconlet provides full information about author, image resolution, graphics format and license type.

This week, in our Freeware Page, we have posted a brief review about one of the most interesting Firefox add-on we have found in the Mozilla website: Sage. This particular add-on allows you to easily read and manage all your favorite web feeds directly using Firefox. Sage contains also a feed discover who allows you to find RSS simply typing a keyword, moreover it is possible to import and export your web feeds through the OPML format. The graphics is very enjoyable and complete and after few minutes you forget the RSS reader you have used till now. Something to try!

In many collaborative projects it is often necessary to share ideas, images, documents, ect.. but, as everyone could testify: ideas fastly flight away; it is not easy to remember video and photographs and so on… In a traditional office a common board could effectively help to coordinate trends and share photos but when working in internet it is high the possibility that many of this stuff will be lost before next meeting with colleagues. Moreover, now it is possible to use Stixy, a simple intuitive but powerful online application which allows you to display and share all you want (notes, photos, documents, to-do lists and also music) on the web. We tried Stixy (better its Beta version) and we enjoyed it a lot: clean, easy to share and positively influenced the mood in our team. For some more information you can read a brief review in our Freeware Page. Something to try!

In our personal opinion gOS could be the -OS + hardware solution- for everyone. In fact we do not think useful to distinguish tech developed countries for the personal income of their citizens. Everyday we do meet many people with big problems in using pcs and internet also in the most developed countries so why do not spread new technologies using a simplified (we mean simpler to use, not a less featured Linux) OS which can run using cheap hardware? gOS could be one of the possible solution. This week in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a detailed review about this new (not so new because it has been built on Ubuntu) OS and we also give some technical information about transforming your Ubuntu in gOS (Beware! We were not able to downgrade to Ubuntu so, if you are not an expert, consider as definitive your Ubuntu changes to gOS!!) gOS is clean, easily (and immediately) usable OS with many intuitive icons which simplify the way of using your pc. gOS integrates many Google online services as Mail, Docs, Calendar, Maps, Docs, Products, News and other Web 2.0 websites as Meebo, YouTube, Blogger, Wikipedia, etc.. In few words this OS hasn’t any new “revolutionary” feature but uses -at their best- many Web 2.0 websites. Highly recommended (and not only to the youngest and the elders)!

Clonezilla-SysRescCD is something we have been looking for since months. In our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief (full of links) review about this rescue Cd in its 1.3.0 version. Clonezilla-SysRescCD is a very interesting merge (multi boot CD) between Clonezilla and SystemRescueCD which allows you to solve many (better quite all, for what we read) “disasters”; that can be made by everyday pc users like us. Just to sum up the features contained in Clonezilla-SysRescCD we add some brief notes about the two different “parts”; contained in it. Clonezilla is a fast and reliable OpenSource clone system (OCS) which supports ext2, ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs, fat and ntfs partitions. On the other hand SystemRescueCD, based on a bootable Linux OS, allows you to repair your system and/or recover your data after a crash. We simulated some “disasters”; on an old Pentium4 (running Windows XP) and the results we obtained were substantially very positive.

In our Linux Page (in Spanish) we have posted a brief but complete review (with all the links for the downloads) about the new Linux version of Skype and Google Earth. Finally, in Skype 2.0, not only we could use the audio and chat features but also the video option using our favorite webcam also in the Linux version. The new Google Earth 4.2 has been implemented with new options as Clouds, Radar, Conditions & Forecast and Information. This new Google Earth version seem to be very complete and the 50,000 (not bad !) cities now covered will be more during the next months. I personally think that this new versions of Skype and Google Earth cancel the gap between Windows and Linux we all have stood till now. Well done!

Rockbox is the best alternative you can find to many firmware of mp3 player currently on sale. for many models it can be installed without removing the original firmware and in this case you can decide at every boot up what firmware you prefer to use. This week, in our Freeware Page, we have posted a brief review about this open-source firmware which really adds new features to your mp3 player; for example, Rockbox allows you to play movies on a iPod Photo or adds games to your Sansa e200 or c200 series. The installation is not difficult but a minimal previous experience in this field is preferable: if something goes wrong, please, don’t panic but try to solve it following the many tips contained in the Rockbox website or reset your mp3 player. Last but not least, in the “Customizing Rockbox” section you will find a huge quantity of resources to customize your mp3 player. Recommended (and really funny)!
